How Ahmed Seddiqi Built the Region's Most Ambitious RCPO Collection
How two years of global hunting, $10 million in investment, and a bold focus on Day-Dates created the region's most distinctive certified pre-owned collection.
Where Rare Rolex References Take Centre Stage
Most certified pre-owned Rolex programmes follow a predictable pattern: display cases filled with Submariners, Daytonas, GMT-Masters - the sports models everyone recognises and most retailers chase. When Ahmed Seddiqi opened their RCPO boutique at Wafi Mall in November 2024, they decided to write a different story entirely.
A Different Kind of Hunt
Mohammed Abdulmagied Seddiqi and his cousin Mohammed Abdul Hamied spent nearly two years building what would become one of the world's most distinctive certified pre-owned collections. Their strategy was deliberate: "We wanted to find rare watches," Mohammed Abdulmagied explained. "We didn't want to focus only on professional models. We have some, of course, as it's a must-have in any collection, but we wanted to focus on pieces that are almost unheard of."
What emerged was a collection that defied conventional wisdom about what certified pre-owned should look like. Whilst other boutiques stocked the usual suspects, Ahmed Seddiqi focused on Day-Dates—particularly gem-set examples and exotic dial variations that once dominated the Gulf region's luxury landscape decades ago. "We thought that we had to do something totally different," Mohammed Abdulmagied noted. "They're rarer than the professional models, they're more artistic pieces, and they're totally different."
Why It Matters Here
For years, the pre-owned market in the Middle East faced challenges around provenance, servicing and authentication. Ahmed Seddiqi's long-standing relationship with Rolex, dating back to 1952, helped establish a different approach. Through the Rolex Certified Pre‑Owned programme, every watch is authenticated, serviced and backed by a two‑year international guarantee, bringing greater confidence to collectors seeking references no longer available at retail.
At the same time, collecting in the region has evolved. Increased access to horological knowledge, the influence of social media and the growth of Dubai Watch Week have fostered a deeper appreciation for rarity and provenance. Today, collectors are looking beyond familiar references in search of watches that capture unique moments in Rolex's history, from unusual dials and materials to distinctive gem‑set executions.
What RCPO Offers Today
The focus remains intentionally off-catalogue. Whilst steel sports models occasionally appear—commanding premiums that reflect their rarity—the heart of the collection celebrates what made Rolex's Day-Date the region's status symbol for decades: bold design choices, precious materials, and the kind of artisanal dial work that modern manufacturing has largely standardised away.
Looking Forward
Ahmed Seddiqi's RCPO initiative is a bet that collectors are ready for curation that prioritises rarity and artistry over retail popularity. In a market where Daytonas and Submariners dominate conversation, focusing on gem-set Day-Dates and exotic dial variations requires conviction.
That conviction is already proving itself. "People are really buying these pieces, especially the really expensive off-catalogue pieces," Abdul Hamied noted. The trust that took 70 years to build is now enabling collectors to explore Rolex's history with confidence, knowing that authentication, servicing, and certification meet the brand's own standards.
For a region that historically focused on new watches, RCPO offers something increasingly valuable: access to pieces that tell more interesting stories than anything currently in production.
