As the world of Formula 1 descends on Abu Dhabi, we pick out the high-performance luxury Swiss watches that will set pulses racing in the paddock
This year’s Formula 1 World Championship may not be decided at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend (Lewis Hamilton has that sewn up already), but it will still deliver the petrol-fuelled mix of glamour, luxury and excitement it’s become known for since the race was first held here almost a decade ago. Rest assured, there will be some serious wristwear on show – as per.
A lot of these watches will appear in the paddock. Most teams have high-end Swiss watch sponsors. Hamilton and his Mercedes team will be sporting IWC watches; Ferrari will wield Hublot; Red Bull will tick to TAG Heuer time; and McLaren will tune their engines to the beat of Richard Mille, creator of those bombastic ‘racing cars for the wrist’.
Indeed, motor sport and wristwatches go together like horse and cart – the parallels between the mechanics of a racecar engine and a watch movement reach their zenith when comparing the elite worlds of F1 engineering and fine watchmaking.
All that in mind, here’s our line-up of what to wear in the pitlane this weekend.
