Bell & Ross: The Masters of the Modern Square
Exploring the brand inspired by aviation instrumentation.
The Start
From day one, Bell & Ross - founded in 1994 by Bruno Belamich and Carlos Rosillo - has had a clear vision for what their watches are. The French brand's watches are tough, and they are built with a clear purpose. Early Bell & Ross watches were specialised tools, often made in partnership with military units or security services, made for bomb disposal or ultra-deep diving. One area of operation that Bell & Ross always specialised in, and excelled at, was pilot's watches. Nowhere is that clearer than with the iconic BR 01.
From Cockpit to Icon
Twenty years ago, Bell & Ross created a design that is truly one of the few genuinely iconic watch designs of the 21st century — a watch that today defines the identity of the brand's Professional collection. That watch is, of course, the BR 01 Instrument. The inspiration for this large, square watch with its four prominent case screws is antique dashboard instruments, commonly found in older military aeroplanes. What Bell & Ross did was adapt this functional and utilitarian design for the wrist. Today, the legacy of the BR 01 Instrument is easy to see in the Professional collection, built around the core of the 41mm BR-03 design and expanded into the BR-03 Diver, the BR-03 GMT, the BR-03 Chrono and most recently, the BR-X3. All these designs share the same fundamentals: square case, round dial, prominent screws and a wide strap — but what is most surprising is just how versatile this core concept is.
An Urban Evolution
Of course, over the years, the brand has made watches that aren't pure aviation pieces, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the Urban collection, which debuted with the BR-05 in 2019. On the surface, the BR-05 is a sleek, luxury sports watch, with an integrated bracelet — a genre of watch that will likely be very familiar. Look closer, though, and the BR-05 is also a smart evolution of the brand's core DNA, for all that the edges are rounded, and the overall look is a little softer, the design isn't very far removed from that original instrument panel aesthetic. The time-only BR-05 design was quickly joined by chronograph and GMT models, and even the more avant-garde BR-X5, with one eye-catching example being the BR-X5 iridescent.
Pushing the Limits of Design
Some of Bell & Ross' most exciting and radical designs live in its Concept collection. While you'll find examples of the core BR-03 and newer BR-05 models under this banner, it's what Bell & Ross has done with them that's remarkable. The Flight Instruments line cleverly uses the dial to replicate aviation instrumentation, like horizon indicators and gyrocompasses, while the Lum designs make every possible part of the watch luminescent. Perhaps most iconic are Bell & Ross' skull watches — most recently expressed as the Cyber Skull, which offers an open-worked square, made from ceramic or sapphire, and filling it is a contemporary, faceted take on the iconic skull & crossbones motif.
So if you're a pilot or just looking for a watch with purpose, Bell & Ross might be the brand for you.
